On Thursday, March 17, Springboard Community Services hosted a celebratory luncheon for the Foster Grandparents Program. The gathering marked the first time since the pandemic began in 2020 that participants and staff were able to meet in person and celebrate their work.

(Back Row-L-R) Volunteer Coordinator, Regina Tabb, and Program Manager, Rochele Jones pose with Foster Grandparent honorees (l-r) Ms. Geraldine Miller, the longest-serving Foster Grandparent serving since 2004 with a total of 18,162 service hours; Ms. Juanita Davenport, our oldest serving volunteer at 91 years young who has given 15,053 hours, Ms. JoAnn White has been a Foster Grandparent since 2009 — serving 15,470 hours and Mr. Warren Snowden, Jr., the only male Foster Grandparent who has given 11,034 hours.

When we give true love from the heart, true love comes back,” said 91-year-old Juanita Davenport, who has volunteered 15,053 hours in the Union Baptist Head Start and was one of the four outstanding members honored at the celebration.

Other honorees include Geraldine Miller, the longest-serving member who began the program in 2004 and has given 18,162 service hours; Warren Snowden, Jr. the only man participating in the program and was given 11,034 hours, and JoAnn White, a foster grandparent since 2009 who has given 15,470 hours of service.

Springboard started the Program in 1973 to allow older adults from the community to share their knowledge, warmth, and compassion with children. Volunteers work as aides in schools, daycare centers, Head Start programs, and family support centers.

The event was held as part of AmeriCorps Week a time to celebrate programs supported by AmeriCorps. To participate in the Foster Grandparent Program, contact Rochele Jones at 410-366-1980 ext. 274.
